The Making of Our Soap
We believe that a soap can look good while destroying filth just as well as heroes of the old vanquished the evil beasts that plagued the earth.
At the Soap of Legends, we take pride in the attention to detail in our process, a multi-step and labor intensive activity. First, a model of what we want our soap to look like is created in clay, and a mold of it is made in moulage, a gelatin-based substance. It is melted and poured over the model in parts, until the moulage fully encompasses the model. Once it is dry, the model and mold are separated carefully, and the mold is ready to use with our soap.
Below is how a wing was sculpted on the model of Smaug the Magic Dragon.

After this is done, we create our soap to pour into the mold. Below is the process of the melting of our oils and the preparation of lye.
Once Sodium Hydroxide, or Lye, is combined with water, the water heats up rapidly to around seventy degrees Celsius. Once the oils and fats have melted and are within a range of five degrees Celsius in common with the lye, they are combined at around forty to sixty degrees Celsius, then quickly blended. The reaction between fatty acids and sodium hydroxide is called saponification. At the point of saponification, the lye is converted to glycerin, all of its harmful properties converted into something that makes our soap delightfully bubbly. The soap is then poured into the mold, packed in, and then removed once the shape is set. It is left to cure for a length of time, then is ready to use.
A NOTE OF CAUTION!
Warning: For your safety, do not try this at home. Sodium hydroxide can cause third degree burns if simply touched, and when combined with water, the reaction gives off dangerous fumes that will damage your lungs. Our lab activities were conducted with the necessary preliminary information and safety skills, as well as protective gear. The sodium hydroxide was handled with extreme caution, and mixed with water under an active fume hood.
